Romeo and Juliet belong to a tradition of tragic romanticism dating back to ancient times. The plot is based on an Italian story translated into verse as "The Tragic History of Romeus and Juliet" by Arthur Brock in 1562 and written in prose in the Palace of Pleasure by William Feiner in 1567

Romeo and Juliet

is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in his early career about two star-crossed young lovers whose deaths eventually settle their fake families. It was one of Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of the most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are considered archetypal young lovers.

Romeo & Juliet
Romeo and Juliet belong to a tradition of tragic romanticism dating back to ancient times. The plot is based on an Italian story translated into verse as "The Tragic History of Romeus and Juliet" by Arthur Brock in 1562 and written in prose in the Palace of Pleasure by William Feiner in 1567. Shakespeare lent heavily to both but expanded the plot by developing a number of supporting characters, especially Marcio. However, probably written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in the Quarto version in 1597. The text of the First Quarto version was of poor quality, however, and later editions revised the text to better suit Shakespeare's origin.

Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure (especially effects such as the transition between comedy and tragedy to the suspense, the expansion of minor characters, and his use of subtleties to decorate the story) was praised as a prelude to his dramatic skill. The play attributes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the shape as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more in the sonnet during the play.

Romeo and Juliet have been adapted many times to the stage, cinema, music, and opera. During the English reconstruction, it was regenerated and heavily restored by William Devant. David Garrick's 18th-century version also changed several scenes, removing material then considered obscene, and George Benda's Romeo and Julie omitted much of the work and added a happy ending.

Performances in the 19th century, including that of Charlotte Cushman, restored the original text and focused more on realism. John Gielgud's 1935 version kept very close to Shakespeare's text and used Elizabethan costumes and stages to enhance the drama. In the twentieth century and into the 21st century, the play was staged in versions as diverse as George Cocor's 1936 film Romeo and Juliet, the 1968 version of Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, and Romeo + Juliet, 1996's MTV.

      • William Shakespeare (born April 26, 1564 - April 23, 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, regarded by many as the greatest English-language writer and playwright in the world.
He is often called the National Poet of England and "Hail from Avon" (or simply "Hail"). His existing works, including collaborations, consist of 39 plays, 154 sonatas, two long poems, and several other verses, some of which are uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major live language and are more often
performed than those of another playwright.

Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and the Twins Hammett and Judith.
Sometime between 1585 and 1592 London began a successful career as an actor, writer, and part of a game company called Lord Chamberlain, later known as King's Men. At age 49 (around 1613) he seems to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later.
Few of Shakespeare's private life records survive; This has caused much speculation on topics such as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

Shakespeare produced most of his well-known works from 1589 to 1613.
His first plays were mostly comedic and historical and are considered some of the best works produced in these genres. Until about 1608 he wrote mainly tragedies, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be the best works of English.
At the last stage of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as novels) and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of Shakespeare's plays were published in varying quality and accuracy editions throughout his life. However, in 1623, two actors and Shakespeare's friends, John Hemmings and Henry Condell published a more crucial text known as "The First Polio," a subsequent compilation of Shakespeare's dramatic works that included all but two of his plays.
The volume was preceded in a poem by Ben Johnson, in which Johnson clearly portrays Shakespeare in a famous quote now as "not in the age, but forever."
